In 1995, the Australian participants on SWY7 decided to establish an alumni association. The Ship for World Youth Australian Alumni Association was created as the Australian member of an international SWY alumni network. A basic charter and executive committee were established. In 1999, the name "SWY Australia" was adopted, along with a new executive committee structure, and in 2001, a new charter. Since 1999, there has been a marked increase in the active involvement of SWY Australia members. Australia was one of the countries invited to participate on the first SWY program in 1989, and has been fortunate to have been invited to participate on a number of programs since. See Past Programs for more information.
