Steve Mendl NATIONAL LEADER - lives in the Australian State of Queensland |
||
|
My name is Steve Mendl and I am a professional presenter, transition coach, wedding DJ/MC, youth advocate and sports tragic from Brisbane. I have held several youth focussed positions including: National President and Chairman of CanTeen Australia (an organisation for young people living with cancer), Commissioner for Public Relations and Marketing for Scouts Australia (ACT Branch), Deputy Chair of the Chief Minister’s Youth Advisory Council and Head Coach (in training) for stepUP Foundation. I expect SWY22 to be a great learning and growing experience for myself as well as the Australian delegation. The biggest contribution I can make is share my knowledge, skills, experiences and perspectives with those on board the Fuji Maru and later with others beyond program. I am looking forward with great anticipation to actively participating in, and contributing to SWY22. |

Joshua Hoare - lives in the Australian State of New South Wales |
||
![]() |
Joshua’s work pioneers new directions in physical theatre, using physical vocabularies from theatre, circus and dance. Being particularly interested in collaborative cross genre work, he ran away early in his career to the circus only to run straight through and keep on running. With experience and training in theatre, dance, music and circus, his work resists stereotyping and conventional classification. On completing a bachelor of Arts at Sydney University in languages, French, Japanese and Mandarin, Josh moved to Melbourne on acceptance into the National Institute of Circus Arts 3 year Bachelor program. Using this work not only in a performative context, Josh also works with youth in developing self confidence, trust and team work. In a system where many young people are left behind, circus and performing arts has proven to be a powerful tool in getting young people to engage with each other and push themselves to be disciplined and exceed their expectations of themselves and each other. Forgoing the conventional path, Josh lives his mantra of taking the road less travelled. His openness and acceptance of others has lead to a life committed to learning languages, thereby learning other ways of thinking. Growing up in rural north west New South Wales, and moving to Sydney at 18, his country sensibilities and international leanings make him a perfect representative in the australian delegation for SWY22. He's eagerly awaiting finding his sea legs and making good use of the buffet! |

Ainsley Gilkes - lives in the Australian State of New South Wales |
||
![]() |
I'm Ainsley Gilkes, a senior HR specialist from Sydney, whose been involved in many initiatives to do with young peoples' employment, entrepreneurship and leadership development over the last ten years. I've run a business training young entrepreneurs; contributed to APEC and Commonwealth youth programs; co-founded and been a Director of the Enterprise Network for Young Australians; sat on Microsoft's international 'Board of the Future'; led university leadership programs in Australia & Asia; and now work at OneSteel Ltd on graduate recruitment and development initiatives (amongst other things!). I'm currently also a Director of the Australian Association of Graduate Employers and back at uni part-time. SWY22 will be, for me, an opportunity to share experiences and gain new insights with the (very diverse!) range of participants. I'm looking forward to the unique intercultural learning experience that SWY22 provides and am excited about sparking new ideas and collaborative projects with those onboard. I know there will be many avenues following the program for our delegation to embed our new perspectives and approaches back into our work and community, and share the SWY experience with others! |

| Abbey MacDonald - lives in the Australian State of Tasmania |
||
![]() |
My name is Abbey MacDonald and I am a secondary Visual and Media Arts teacher, practicing artist and PhD candidate at UTAS. My work as a teacher within my school has given me opportunity to work with and for youth in capacities such as a grade coordinator, deputy house head, boarding house tutor, charity event organiser, soccer coach and camp volunteer. I anticipate that SWY22 will provide an exciting opportunity to engage with likeminded people who are passionate about rising to challenges and broadening horizons. The biggest contribution I can make is to share my passion, enthusiasm and positive energy to help benefit and enrich the experience for my fellow participants on board SWYY22, and do my best to help ensure those around me make the very most of this amazing opportunity. |

| Linh Do - lives in the Australian State of Victoria |
||
![]() |
Linh spends her time doubling as a university student and an environmentalist. She is undertaking a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne majoring in International Politics and Environmental Studies. In her other life, she is the National Director of Change&Switch, an organisation that amalgamates environmental and humanitarian issues. She is also involved with a number of other organisations including The Climate Project amongst, the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria and Lord Somers Camp, which is a young development focused organisation. Having always been interested in the SWY program since hearing about it, she is hoping that the experience will be life changing in that she can fully embrace the concept of global citizenship by learning from all of the other cultures on board. Linh hopes to contribute to the Ship by sharing her knowledge of environmental issues, experiences with working with a broad range of young people and her quirks which will prevent the feasibility of ship-boredom. |

Sarah Spottiswood - lives in the Australian State of Victoria |
||
![]() |
My name is Sarah Spottiswood and I am from Melbourne. I am a 3rd year Arts/Law student at Monash University, majoring in International Relations and Japanese. My passion is international cooperation and conflict resolution and I hope to pursue this when I graduate. I have been involved in a range of youth organisations. Most recently, I was a director of projects about environmental sustainability and education about world issues through AIESEC, the world’s largest student-run organisation. I have participated in two transformative student exchanges to Yokohama Eiwa School, Japan and to the Berkeley University of California, USA. I am a volunteer surf lifesaver at Inverloch Surf Lifesaving Club, and in my final year of high school I was involved in the set up of an exchange program with Danila Dilba, an Aboriginal Medical Service in Darwin. As a result of these activities I have learnt a lot about myself but also about the dynamic nature of organisations that involve youth: I am inspired by the energy and passion that young people bring to a team. I expect SWY22 to be no exception. I hope to learn a lot about countries that I currently know very little about such as Yemen and Kenya whilst, also gaining new perspectives on world issues. I feel I will be an active contributor to discussions and hope to contribute my knowledge of international affairs to these. I have some experience in giving presentations (some even in Japanese!), so I hope that I can make a positive contribution to Australia’s national presentation. By being enthusiastic and personable I hope to contribute to the program by actively embracing the spirit of the voyage. |

My name is Rebecca Marshallsay, I am from Adelaide but have recently relocated to the Gold Coast. I am currently studying politics & communications and have also been working in the aquatics industry for several years now, having recently taken a position working for Surf Life Saving Queensland. I come from a strong volunteering back ground-as a patrolling Surf Life Saver & as a Special Activities Leader (Choreography) for Scouts Australia. These activities have fostered a strong interest in Youth Development & I have been fortunate enough to have had a diverse range of experiences in this area including as a participant in several national leadership programs through Surf Life Saving, as Youth Development Officer for Christies Beach Surf Club, at the International Gold Event in Mauritius through the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and at the 2007 International Youth Leadership Conference in Prague. From a personal perspective, I am looking forward to the Ship for World Youth as an exciting opportunity to broaden my own horizons & to engage with other young people from a variety of backgrounds. I believe that my experience with international programs & exchanges will be a valuable contribution to the Australian delegation and I hope that my passion to engage with & learn from other youth members will contribute positively towards life aboard the ship. |
