Frequently asked Questions

When did this program begin?
Officially on the 9th January 2006.
What is the purpose of this program?
To provide more learning materials for all communities of the world. And to provide a simple and effective way for busy people to easily contribute.
Does the one-book project make a profit?
No profit at all. There is no money exchanged and there are no staff involved with this project. Volunteers ensure each book reaches the correct destination in person; this involves worldwide SWY and SSEAYP Alumni member co-operation.
Does this program have any Religious affiliation?
No.
Which book should I choose to send?
When you choose a destination, attempt to match your book with the student age and school years. Your book will always reach a school teacher who will be able to help find the most suitable student ages for your selection.
Can I send items other than books?
Books are preferred, however you are welcome to send other educational items such as stationary or teaching poster or student resources. Please consider the health of our environment and limit the amount of packaging, plastic items, and choose natural materials, recycled papers and cardboard.
Can I send more than one book?
Yes. But be aware that if you arrange for a fantastic 2-tonne truck load of books to arrive, the school may have no buildings to house them - of course you could offer to build a library for the books!
Can I send multiple copies of the same books?
Yes. This may be useful for a classroom situation.
Can I send used books rather than new ones?
Yes. New books are preferable, but it is very understandable that not everyone is able to purchase new books. So, provided your used books are in good condition, then please send them.
How is the ‘destination list’ formulated?

By asking schools if they want to participate. The list started with only two schools in January 2006. The one-book project aims ensure regional, remote and establishing schools all around the world benefit from your generosity. The destination list will change, so please forward details of any schools suitable for the ‘destination list’ Email onebookproject@swyaustralia.org
How often is the school ‘destination list’ changed?
The ‘destination list’ is updated continuously. The list is always dated, so if you have been busy and not sent your books, then check the latest version of the list online to see which schools are mentioned.
Why do I write in the front of the book?
We request you limit what you write to simply your FIRST name, COUNTRY name and the DATE. The most important gesture is the book being sent. By writing only your first name, you make the gift very personal – reading the inscription “Miyuki” from “Japan” on the “15th August 2006” is a wonderful experience for student imagination… “Beauregard” from “Chile”… “John” from “New Zealand”…
In what language should the books be written?
English may not be the first language for the destination schools, nor in the country where you are sourcing the books, so it is fine to send a non-english book. It may be useful to include English translation for early childhood books that have only a small amount of text.

Please... do not send any printed materials that are illegal, offensive, restricted, or which constitutes marketing or promotion of any individual organisation or cause.
