MEDIA RELEASE Ship
for World Youth Applications Now Open Applications are now open for young Australians interested in participating in the 17th Ship for World Youth program. An initiative of the Prime Minister’s Office within the Government of Japan, the Ship for World Youth is an international program bringing together almost 300 young people from 13 nations. Eleven young Australians (18 to 30 years), recognised as leaders in their communities, will be selected to represent Australia in the 17th Ship for World Youth Program on the Nippon Maru cruiseliner, together with a National Leader. Over one hundred young Australians have enjoyed this extraordinary cultural experience on previous voyages. Established in 1989, this program is the most prestigious of its kind in the world. Over two months the delegates will participate in numerous activities on the Ship and in Ports of Call, including lectures from international speakers, seminars and discussions on topics of global significance, and cultural exchanges with other delegates. Delegates will also meet with dignitaries such as the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Japan as well as members of government in hosting countries. The Australian Delegation departs for Tokyo on 10 January, and will return on 2 March 2004. In addition to one week in Japan, the participants will also visit Sydney (Australia), Wellington (NZ), and Suva (Fiji), and will return to Tokyo to disembark. The objectives are to encourage international cooperation and understanding, as well as to promote friendship between the youth of Japan and youth of other nations. As the world moves with increasing speed towards globalisation, the Ship for World Youth allows these young Australians to expand their world views and to influence their respective industries and communities in the future. Applications for Participating Youth will close 20 August 2004. Information nights will be held in major cities in early August. For application forms and further details regarding the SWY17 program,
