Australian Delegation

Mr David Skinner QLD
17th Ship for World Youth Australian Delegation National Leader

Hi shipmates. I live in sunny Queensland. Love boats, diving (anything to do with the water)

My background is civil engineering and in more recent years, specifically project management. Currently work as a consultant to Brisbane City Council, developing business opportunities with reclaiming water from sewerage for use in industry.

I have worked with youth in the community for many years primarily through Rotary and now Youth Enterprise Trust.

I feel it an honour and privilege to be part of a team of outstanding people as yourselves and represent our country with pride. I look forward to getting to know you, sharing the awesome times together, and not-so awesome times.

enjoying the journey - David

Ms Jessica Kiely NSW - Assistant National Leader

Holding down a full time desk job just isn’t Jessica Kiely’s style – because she’d prefer to run the company! Which would explain why Jessica runs two successful companies - Youth 2 Youth and New Horizon Tutoring, her first ever business that she’s been running since the age of 21.

In addition to offering in house tutoring for school students through New Horizon, her company Youth 2 Youth assists young people to build their career, business and enterprise skills through fun, interactive workshops in schools, universities, councils, and in partnership with youth organisations. Youth 2 Youth’s website is also packed full of free resources, articles, and links - all created for young people by young people!

In addition to running her two businesses, Jessica is also a dance teacher - teaching jazz, contemporary and tap - for the past four years. Jessica also recently attended a field trip to India to help her create Aussie based eco-preneurial programs for young Australians.

Jessica’s key passions are equipping young people with the skills to turn their ideas into a new business venture or community project, inspiring other young people to protect our environment and create eco-friendly initiatives, and to work in collaboration with other passionate young people in business.

Mr Lachie McIver QLD - Assistant National Leader

My name's Lachlan McIver and I'm a 23yr-old medical student from Far North Queensland. I grew up on a small beef cattle property but currently live in Melbourne and hope to complete my studies in 2005. My particular interests lie in the fields of remote and indigenous health care, as well as primary health care education and emergency medicine.

I am passionate about the issues of health, education, the environment, agriculture and rural Australia. I'm delighted to be a part of the SWY17 team, and hope that my experiences and enthusiasm enable me to make a positive contribution to the program.

Mr Masepah Banu NSW

I am an Indigenous Australian, a Torres Strait Islander and a very proud Australian. I grew up on my Dad’s island called Boigu, population 300. Indeed a huge cultural-surprise when I pursued my education in Brisbane, Sydney and now in Canberra - currently studying Introduction to Statistics at the Centre for Continuing Education in Australian National University. I work for a government office called "Office of the Registrar of Aboriginal Corporations" (ORAC). ORAC role is to incorporate, assist and regulate Indigenous businesses.

I will bring to the selected “dynamic youth delegates” my Indigenous aspects. I look forward to observe, note, participate and collaborate in workshops along side with the other 11 nominated countries of the world. I can not wait to find solutions on world issues from a youth perspective and report back to the Australian Government on the outcome of the programme.

I am passionate about educating and training our community, whether it be in TAFE or University. I encourage and hope to be a role-model for my fellow Indigenous and non-Indigenous youths and let them remember the importance of a striving community is based on well prepared sincere educated people.

This programme will be an overall learning experience for one to gain an insight and understanding of other participating countries government systems in the programme. I hope to bring back to my community ideas on addressing our issues from a different view, and most importantly whichever decision we make, we must be accountable in our business affairs with the Australian Government and to the Australian people."

Ms Caroline Bergman NSW

Caroline has worked in communications and the media for the past four years, most recently as the Media Relations Co-ordinator at the City of Sydney. Her role at Council involved strategic communications and managing media issues through two amalgamations, a local government election and key events such as the Rugby World Cup.

Caroline has also worked as a reporter based at NSW State Parliament, and produced documentaries for ABC TV. Her community involvement includes captaining her local soccer team and volunteer work for Oxfam Community Aid Abroad.

Ms Michelle Cheah ACT

Michelle has taken a keen interest in youth issues and community development for many years. During her time in residential college, at the Australian National University and in the local community, Michelle has worked as a leader, representative, coach, academic assistant, volunteer, mediator and pastoral carer. She has made a significant contribution to education policies and community issues in all of these fields, and has empowered individuals by developing their skills and confidence through student leadership forums and development programs she has initiated in public speaking and self-defence. Michelle believes that the Ship for World Youth program will provide a valuable opportunity to build upon these experiences through an exploration of world culture and current global issues.

Michelle is a Commerce and Law graduate of the Australian National University, and currently works closely on policy development for the Australian Government in the Department of Communication, IT and the Arts. She maintains an active lifestyle including a variety of sports (ranging from kickboxing to yoga), travelling regularly, spending time with friends and indulging in her love of food.

She completed Year 12 in 2002 at Margaret River Senior High School, involved in the student council, performing arts (drama, dance and music) and various sports. Since the age of 15 she was heavily involved in the Augusta-Margaret River Youth Advisory Council, which subsequently led to her initiating a youth position for 2003 at the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River, as the Community Development Project Officer.

Her role included developing and organising community projects such as a Community Mentoring Program for local tertiary students, the implementation of the YAC ZoNe plan (developing a large community youth space), and various community and youth events and forums. At the end of 2003 she took off to Europe for 3 months backpacking, and then trekked in Nepal for another month.

She is passionate about education and opportunities for regional young people. She was a 2002 ABC Heywire winner and a member of the 2003 National Roundtable, through which she researched and wrote a 100-page report on Youth Allowance and Regional Young People, which includes 180 case studies of regional young people and their experiences with tertiary education and income support. She is subsequently campaigning for regional student’s rights to the government, the community and on campus.

Naomi loves the ocean and the beautiful environment of Australia. She loves to surf, swim, dance, sing, anything red, sunsets, bare feet, summer and God! She is passionate about human rights and equality, and dreams of one day working in international community development. She loves a challenge and thrills on learning!

My hobbies include dancing (ballet, contemporary, funk), gymnastics (although I am limited to cartwheels and walkovers), singing, ice-skating (backwards!!), soccer and anything energetic! I am also learning to snow ski and speak Italian. I am very much looking forward to this experience on board SWY and hope to meet with the participants VERY SOON!
Ciao.

Ms Deborah Marshall VIC

Hi my name is Deb Marshall from Melbourne. I grew up on the Mornington Peninsula, but did quite a bit of travelling overseas during high school and University, which kept me moving. In 2001, after I had completed my studies in International Trade and Arts (Japanese / Mandarin), I moved to Canberra to work in policy for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affair (DIMIA). Then in January this year I made a big career change swapping the public sector for private to join the National Australia Bank as a Relationship Manager (formally known as a Business Banker). I adore being back in Melbourne and am really enjoying working so closely with my customers and developing their businesses.

Personal highlights for me have been, my year as an exchange student in Japan, working for CBS News at the Nagano Olympics, back packing around Middle East, Mediterranean, and China, and finishing Sydney’s City to Surf run!!! My other interests include; politics and international affairs, sports (jogging, skiing), and simply spending as much time as possible with friends!!
And that’s me in 2 paragraphs. I’m so thrilled and still a little dazed at the invitation to join the 2005 Australian Delegation on SWY17. I can never get enough of interesting conversation, and so more than anything, I am really excited about the quality discussions and friendships that will be generated from my SWY experience!

Mr Antoine Meijer NT

My name is Antoine Meijer and I grew up in Outback Australia. I lived in Alice Springs until finishing Secondary College and then moving to Darwin where I have since graduated from a Bachelor of Laws. I now work for the Attorney General's department and the Federal Court of Australia as a graduate. I have always had a passion for the sciences especially biology and during my law degree I found a passion for Environmental Law and Sustainability issues.

I have contributed to particularly International Students attending the Northern Territory University by providing them better pathways to jobs and community programs. I played a major role at the University residents College where I performed the role as Resident Assistant and Resident Assistant Fellow. These positions within the college provided me with breadth of understanding into pastoral care issues and the opportunity to experience many exciting and diverse cultures. I have also competed for my University at the National University Games as most successful NT athlete for 2002. I have learnt from my experiences in sport that it is true what a great golfer once said, "there are no short cuts on the path to perfection" and this principle has assisted me through not only sport but work and academia.

Live Large!
Antoine

Mr Simon Rice VIC

In working as a Secondary School teacher for the last two years I have developed a great sense of patience, an understanding for a well formed sense of humour and the need to remain positive at all times. Prior to my work as a teacher I have been involved in facilitating Youth Leadership programs aimed at working for justice in our world. One such program encouraged Senior Secondary and University students to visit the Melbourne Juvenille Justice Centre on a weekly basis in a mentoring program. I have also volunteered at Lifeline Crisis telephone counselling and the Matthew Talbot Soup Van.

Living life with passion, commitment and enthusiasm, in my spare time I love to run, and am set to complete my first marathon later this year. It is with great excitement that I look foward to embarking on the Ship for World Youth Program. An experience that I am sure will help continue to shape my ideas, thoughts and beliefs for the future.
